We are delighted to unveil the new 5* luxury accommodation at Thirlestane Castle in Lauder, Scottish Borders - just 35-minutes’ south of Edinburgh. Eight bedrooms spilt over five beautifully restored apartments have been created in the South Wing and are now available for short breaks for individuals or groups of up to sixteen - the perfect venue for private celebrations or a quiet retreat in the countryside. The apartments are part of a huge restoration project following a devastating outbreak of dry rot in 2012.
The accommodation portfolio offers a truly authentic castle experience. Each apartment has been individually designed and lovingly restored with an eclectic mix of contemporary furniture and original items from the castle collections including dramatic family portraits, furniture, personal photographs and smaller items to provide a link with the castle’s history and family. Many items such as classic Singer sewing machines give a nod to the previous uses of the spaces. All of the bathrooms are lavish and spacious with heritage fittings and marble tiling. Vintage-style chandeliers have been installed throughout to make the most of the high-ceilings and grand proportions of the spaces. Lavish designer fabrics dress the large double-height windows and specially mixed heritage paint adorn the walls with both bold yet calming colours used to create different atmospheres in the different spaces.
Each apartment has a sitting room, fully fitted kitchen and dining space. The apartments can be taken either individually or all together with groups benefiting from exclusive use of the South Wing including our authentic Victorian Kitchen as a central dining space. The Castle can be let on a self-catered basis or groups can chose to be catered for in one of the state room by our award-winning caterers for an exciting dining experience.
The apartments have been named to reflect their individual heritage and items within the apartments reflect this. The Maitland takes its name from the family that has lived in the castle for over 400 years. This was also the former castle laundries which is alluded to by the classic Singer sewing machines in the apartment’s hallway. The Lauderdale reflects the fact that the castle is the historic home of the Earls and Duke of Lauderdale. The family’s tartan is used throughout the bedroom to create a baronial feel. Glenburnie (below) is named after both the moor behind the castle and the horse bred by the Maitland-Carew family, ridden by local Border’s medal-winner Ian Stark, that went on to become a three-day eventing European Champion. An original range from 1840 was unearthed during the building work and now forms a focal point in the sitting room.
The Sculleries (bathroom pictured below) was once where the castle’s china and clothes were cleaned and the mangle in the hallway nods to this former use. The flagstone floor here also dates back to the Victorian era. Finally, The Earl and Countess were the private quarters of the 14th Earl and Countess of Lauderdale and their crest can be found on the fireplace in the sitting room of this apartment. The wallpaper panels in the sitting room are a reproduction of an antique tapestry and are reflected in a large gilt mirror that until recently hung in the castle’s State Drawing Room.
A series of experiences are also on offer to guests to give them a truly tailored stay at the castle. These range from spa sessions and food hampers to exclusive tours of the castle.

Having the ability to accommodate groups of up to sixteen people in high-quality accommodation will mean that many more people are able to come and share this beautiful corner of the Scottish Borders.”
Thirlestane Castle is run by a charitable trust and these new apartments are part of the Trustee’s sustainability plan to protect the castle for future.
