Built in 1590, Thirlestane Castle was the ancient seat of the Earls and Duke of Lauderdale and is still home to the Maitland family today. Marvel at exquisite 17th-century plasterwork ceilings, examine one of the largest collections of family portraits in Scotland and enjoy our Toy Museum with its extensive collection of Victorian, Edwardian and Georgian toys.
Explore one of the oldest and finest inhabited castles in Scotland and then take a stroll in the castle grounds through woodland and along the River Leader.
Guided tours of Thirlestane Castle, led by expert local guides, are available from 10:00am - 3:30pm Tuesday-Sunday, from 31st May-September (booking recommended), and exclusive, private tours can be booked year-round. All guests will be invited to enjoy a complimentary cup of tea and a treat with their guide once the tour is complete. Facilities include: free parking, gift shop, children's playground and picnic areas.
Thirlestane Castle also has five luxury apartments which are available for short breaks. Located within the castle's South Wing, the apartments can be taken individually or as a group allowing up to sixteen people to enjoy an authentic castle stay.
Many areas of the castle can also be used for private or corporate events including conferences, board meetings, family reunions, private dining or weddings. Please contact the castle for more information.

Thirlestane Castle is signposted off the A68 at Lauder.
By bus: Buses 51 and 52 stop near the castle and run to and from Edinburgh every hour.
