Wherever you are in the UK, you’re never too far from a heritage attraction or two. Whether you’re planning a day out or a longer break with plenty of options for days out, you’ve come to the right place!
City breaks
The UK has a wide range of diverse cities, the capital cities of London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast are epicentres of heritage, while Britain’s other cities in both urban and rural areas give you plenty of chances to explore and immerse yourself in Britain’s culture. The UK has sprawling urban metropolises, such as Manchester, Liverpool and Bristol, rural cities like Bath and Lincoln that are surrounded by countryside and endless greenery and coastal hubs of culture like Plymouth and Brighton. You can even visit England’s smallest city, Wells, whichever city you choose you’ll have history and events right on your doorstep.
Outstanding Natural Beauty
The UK has 46 Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty dotted all over Britain. Many of these are world famous, like the Cotswolds and the Isles of Scilly. Some areas are rural, like those found in Devon and the North Pennines and others are coastal, like those on the Northumberland Coast. All have a fantastic selection of things to see and do – on top of the AONBs, the UK is home to a wide range of National Parks – if you’re on the hunt for a rural, heritage adventure, you’re really spoiled for choice.
If that wasn’t enough, there are also a host of UNESCO World Heritage sites across the UK, such as the Jurassic Coast in the south of England and the city of Bath.
Coast to coast
If it is the ocean you want, the North Norfolk Coast is home to the 25,000 acre Holkam Estate. There are a number of picturesque towns and villages dotted along the coast of Cornwall, Devon and Dorset and there are Isle of Skye, which can be found off Scotland’s west coast. Pembrokeshire in Wales has some stunning beaches and coastlines and falls within an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with plenty of walks and heritage attractions along the way. England is also home to one of the UK’s longest trails, the South West Coast Path which begins in Somerset and follows the coast through Devon, Dorset and parts of Cornwall where you can enjoy aspects of the region’s maritime history and links to the south west’s involvement in WWII.
The UK’s heritage attractions, whether they are houses, castles or parks, often hold events, theatre performances and more. Keep an eye on our What’s On pages for the latest events.
