For centuries people have been drawn to this inspiring place. From humble beginnings, the magnificent abbey was established by devout monks seeking a simpler existence. The atmospheric ruins that remain are a window into a way of life which shaped the medieval world. When the socially ambitious John Aislabie inherited Studley Royal, he set about creating an elegant water garden of mirror-like ponds, statues and follies, incorporating the romantic ruins into his design. Green lawns stretch down to the riverside, a perfect spot for a picnic. Riverside paths lead to the deer-park, home to Red, Fallow and Sika deer and ancient trees; limes, oaks, and sweet chestnuts. One-of-a-kind, this special place is now recognised as a World Heritage Site. Note: cared for in partnership with English Heritage.

Eating and shopping: large restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, daily specials and Sunday dinner. Studley and abbey tea-rooms in spectacular settings. Large visitor centre shop selling homeware, garden ware, plants, books and artisan products. Smaller shop at Studley entrance. Picnics welcome.

Making the most of your day: Indoors in Porter’s Lodge you can uncover the story of the monks who founded the abbey, or see the mill created by these skilful masters of machinery. You can explore the opulent interior of St Mary’s Church. Fountains Hall has changing art exhibitions.

Outdoors: The hidden herb garden beside the river Skell is waiting to be found. Nature walks and tours guide you through the estate and its history. You can clamber, swing and slide in the playground or find a geocache.

A complimentary minibus service is provided for less mobile visitors and runs between the three entry points on a regular basis. Battery cars can also be hired – please ring in advance to check availability.
