LGBTQA+ History Month takes place every February and this year, there are a host of events taking place across the country with the theme #BehindTheLens and a focus on celebrating queer contributions to cinema.

England


London

Queer Lives at the Tower of London
An immersive theatrical tour of the Tower’s grounds directed by Tom Storey of the Young Vic.

History Month 2023 Film Series at Cinema Museum, Kennington
Five evenings of films directed by LGBTQA+ film makers with a Q&A each night with writers, directors and producers of each film.

Manchester

History Month Literary Salon at Portico Library
A literary salon hosted by Abbi Parcell and Ruby Seddon-Wilson where there will be discussions of history and texts that have empowered the LGBTQA+ community. Visitors are asked to bring a book that inspired them.

Brighton

The Identity Project
In the Jubilee Library, is the Identity Project, an art exhibit featuring 90 black and white portraits of the LGBTQA+ community by Chis Jepson. You can also find free drag shows around St James’ Street on Sunday afternoons. 6th-26th February.

Birmingham

Stem, LGBTQ and You
A networking event for those within STEM looking to find a queer community. The day includes talks by people with a range of STEM backgrounds who are all LGBTQA+.

Norwich

Queer Fest and Queer East
Located in the Shoe Factory Social Club, Queer Fest Art Market, an event for artists and makers. Followed by Queer East art Exhibition, showcasing LGBTQA+ artists.
The first event is 4-5 February, 11am – 4pm, the second event is 10th – 19th, Midday to 6pm.

Kent
Camp Margate and Margate Arts Club
Throughout February, visit Camp Margate and Margate Arts Club for a new show called It’s a Drag. Tickets, £5, from 17th February, 7.30pm

Eastbourne
Take Desire Away: The Queer Sensibility of AE Housman
Visit Eastbourne Library for a show about AE Houseman.

Scotland


Glasgow
LGBTQA+ tours of the Burrell at Burrell Collection
There will be free tours of the Burrell Collection where you can enjoy Chinese art, medieval artefacts and paintings by artists with an LGBTQA+ perspective.
Every Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday from 2pm. Starts 4th Feb.

Edinburgh
Making Trans History, Making Trans Futures
A lecture by Zoe Playdon, author and professor of medical humanities, at the Appleton Theatre.
Free to attend, 16th Feb, 5pm – 6.30pm

LGBTQA+ History Month launched in 2004 and works to raise awareness of untold stories across history from the LGBTQA+ community.
