Heritage Open Days are returning this September from 9th – 18th and this year, the festival is celebrating England’s Astounding Inventions.

Heritage Open Days are England’s largest festival of history and culture and the best part – it’s all for free! With thousands of heritage properties, including some that are rarely opened to the public, Heritage Open Days are ten days dedicated to history and culture. This year, the events will have a theme of invention, industry and innovation with a focus on the industrial revolution and the inventions that have made a difference, not just to history but also the present day.

From steam trains to computer programs, there are a host of events for you to explore throughout the country. In Birmingham, you’ll have the chance to explore the famous canals by kayak or join talks and workshops at buildings across the city, while in Yorkshire there is the chance to see Mary Wollstonecraft’s house – as one of the most celebrated feminists and author who pioneered women’s rights, as well as the mother of Mary Shelley, this is an opportunity not to be missed. The National Trust and English Heritage are also taking part – allowing you free entry into attractions that would normally carry a charge.
