Sheffield will be celebrating its food and drink heritage at a citywide festival as part of this year’s Heritage Open Days.

This year’s theme for the Heritage Open Days, taking place from 10th – 19th September is Edible England and it is hoped that more people than ever will join in the celebration of England’s heritage after last year’s event was forced online.

Heritage Open Days are an annual celebration where hundreds of places and spaces that aren’t usually open to the public, invite people to find out more about their history and heritage. There are currently over 60 events listed on the official event website taking place in Sheffield with the food and drink festival being one of them.

Janet Ridler, from Joined Up Heritage, who is organising events in Sheffield for the open days told reporters: “We want to make sure that the festival doesn’t slip under venues’ and organisers’ radars as they begin to open up again. It will probably be one of the first large scale heritage events to take place across the country.”

There are a number of activities taking place throughout the Festival including:

  • Wardsend Wander at Wardsend Cemetary where people can hear tales of local people who were linked to the food and drink industry.
  • Short walks taking in the places associated with everything from silverware to livestock rearing.
  • Cutlery for Afternoon Tea, an online talk covering the cutlery housed at Kelham Island Museum.
  • How did your Nan Cook It – a display of vintage cookery books at the Central Library
  • Go Foraging on a riverside foraging walk in the Miss Valley
  • Celebrating real ale, pork pies, relish and Sheffield breadcake as well as locally produced food and drink at the Gardener’s Rest.

The festival’s organisers hope that attendees will be able to discover the highs and lows of Victorian and Edwardian England and how the traditions of foraging, growing, making and competing are still very much alive in Sheffield.
