We are midway through June already, how did that happen? After Summer Solstice takes place on June 21st the nights gradually start to get a little bit darker so it’s a timely reminder to make the most of these summer nights whilst we can. Many venues offer later opening and extra entertainment and activity programmes to encourage visitors later in the day. For more information on any of the activities featured visit our What’s On page.

Relax on the lawns of some of the U.K.’s heritage houses as they host a range of theatre performances and cinema showings during summer evenings. In July you could catch A Midsummner Night’s Dream at Thirlestane Castle, or The Importance of Being Earnest in July or Peter Pan in August at Lydiard Park. “Old Herbaceous”, performed in the walled garden at Loseley Park (and pictured above) is described as “Downton Abbey with gardening tips!” Blenheim palace also hosts a variety of outdoor theatre and cinema events during the summer.

If you are an opera fan The Regents Opera Company will be performing The Barber of Seville at Kirklinton Hall on July 14th and Boconnoc in Cornwall opens its doors to the Kandour Quartet from the Royal College of Music who will be performing a special concert in the grounds.

Kew Gardens hosts a series of “Kew The Music” events over summer with concerts to include performances by Steps, The Human League, The Gypsy Kings, Jools Holland and many more.

Take an evening stroll, go for a run or cycle. Spend some time in the local park or on the sports field. Go to your local beauty spot and watch the sun set. Take the kids and the dog, and spend some time soaking up the vitamin D. Take part in an outdoor yoga or pilates class. It’s a great time of year for a refreshing outdoor swim if you have an outdoor pool or lido in your area.

If you’d rather stay at home, do a spot of sunbathing in the garden (don’t forget the sunscreen!) or have a picnic on the lawn. Put the smart phone down and pick up a good book. Make the most of the barbecue season, or if that’s not for you, cook your food indoors as normal but eat it “al fresco”.

Get the paddling pool and the water pistols out. Don’t put it off until tomorrow, summer is short in Britain, make the most of it!
