Heritage Open Day - Devey In Sudbury: The influence of George Devey on Sudbury’s Architecture

About

We are running a number of tours as Sudbury Village, Derbyshire during Heritage Open Days, where visitors will discover more about George Devey's influence on the architectural style of the village.

Join us as we celebrate Heritage Open Days, encouraging everyone to engage with their local heritage, and take part in events happening across the country, from the 9th-18th September 2022.

This year we are celebrating England’s rich history of invention, industry and innovation, and are hosting a series of events around the subject of noted architect George Devey, who is credited as designing Sudbury Gasworks, as well are exploring the history of gas production and its importance within country estates.

We will be inviting guests to come on a walking tour of Sudbury Village, taking in the historic highlights and buildings designed by Devey, as well as a tour inside the Gasworks, seeing progress in its redevelopment as a community and heritage space.

The event is FREE to attend and will take place on the 10th and 17th of September.
The tour on the 10th will be led by Cherry Ann Knott, former Manager and Curator of the Museum of Childhood at Sudbury hall.
The tour on the 17th will be led by Trustees and residents of Sudbury Village.

We also have a free self-led guide which visitors can use if unable to attend a timed tour.

Please note that areas of this walking tour cover lanes/roads which can be bumpy, and there is uneven ground around the Gasworks site whilst building works continue. Toilets are available at Sudbury Church and Sudbury Courtyard.
