Enjoy FREE guided tours of this unique, historic flour mill and witness how a revolutionary invention in the Victorian period resulted in our flour being ground using state-of-the-art machinery, instead of the traditional waterwheel and millstones.
Throughout the weekend (17 - 18 September) we will be offering FREE guided tours so you can learn about the fascinating history of our Mill and witness our ground-breaking Victorian roller-milling machinery in action grinding flour.
Traditionally mills used either windsails or waterwheels and millstones to grind flour. Following the pioneering invention of roller-milling during the Victorian period, Caudwell’s Mill adopted the exciting new system of water powered turbines and steel-toothed rollers and began milling flour using the most advanced technology of the time. This resulted in the more efficient production of much finer and cheaper flour. Our wonderfully preserved set of roller mill machinery is believed to be the only complete working set in the world.
Excitingly, that same machinery is now used to generate electricity using fully sustainable hydro-energy which means that our entire site, including our lights and computers, can be powered using this extraordinary Victorian invention. We are proud to be a historic site that represents all Four Ages of the Industrial Revolution!
Fun activities for all the family include having a go at grinding flour using our set of ancient querns. Our resident artists in the old mill stable buildings will also be offering the chance for visitors to have a go at lino-printing from a specially designed set of mill-related images to take home as souvenirs. We look forward to welcoming you!
