Clock Tower Creep

About

Call into Cardiff Castle this Hallowe’en for some spooky tours, games and trails as we delve deeper into some mysterious and unexplained happenings at the Castle on Saturday and Sunday 30 – 31 October from 2pm – 5pm.

With stories, workshops and Hallowe’en arts and crafts, it’s a great setting for families to come along and enjoy some ghostly goings-on! And don’t forget to come in costume. New for this year are special tours of the Castle’s famous Clock Tower, said to be one of the most mysterious parts of the Castle. It was here, within the Summer Smoking Room, at the top of the Clock Tower, that the 3rd Marquess of Bute held séances and tried to communicate with the ‘unseen’.

An extremely devout man and a Catholic convert, Lord Bute also had a huge interest in astrology, the paranormal and the occult. His diaries were full of references to astrology and he regularly consulted astrologers and attributed disasters to the unfavourable movements of the planets. He even had predictive astrological charts drawn up for his children. Lord Bute was also fascinated by the idea of ghosts and was a member of the Society for Psychical Research. He investigated the paranormal wherever he could and his academic mind was always drawn to the mystery of the inexplicable. Some say, that to this day, there are some unexplained happenings in the Clock Tower. The tour is best suited to adults and older children as there are 121 steps to reach the top of the Clock Tower. It is worth the effort; the walls, floor and ceiling are ablaze with colourful decoration and it is a rare opportunity to see the magnificent rooms within the Clock Tower that is such a familiar landmark in the city.
