Britain has a hugely diverse history which is partly what makes the country’s heritage so fascinating. From the early tribes to the Roman, Viking, Saxon and Norman invasions to the establishment of the monarchy and on to more modern times, there are endless stories to be told about the UK’s foundations.
Invasions, wars and revolution
In the early days of settlement in the UK, people formed tribes, which in turn became the clans of Scotland and formed the various villages and towns that we now know. We’re all most aware (though probably because of the insurance company more than anything else) of the Battle of Hastings in 1066, which kickstarted the Norman reign and the establishment of the monarchy, before the middle ages, the Tudors with their many fights overseas and the English Civil War and Revolution, which saw the monarchy disbanded and then reinstated.
The making of modern Britain
Britain as we know it is shaped because of its past.
The historic buildings we have that makes Britain such a beautiful place to visit, the castles that dominate the skylines and the society that we have in place all come from our past. British staples like fish and chips, pie and mash and more are all parts of our heritage. It is never too difficult to spot a blast from the past, with the cobbled streets that can still be found in places in Northern England, the thatched cottages that can still be seen in the south west and miners’ cottages that are converted into modern homes in Wales.
Take a look at the some of the different aspects of our heritage below.
