Prehistory is the name for the period of time before written records existed and as such, is the era that historians know the least about. It is generally agreed that prehistory covers the period of time before the year AD43.
The earliest humans are believed to have arrived in what is now considered to be the UK 900,000 years ago. Prehistory stretches from then until the Roman invasion which took place in AD43. What we know about this period is pieced together through artefacts discovered at burial sites, caves and at places like henges and hillforts that still litter the landscape today.
The eras of Prehistory are known as the Stone, Bronze and Iron ages -named for the main tools used at the time. Each of these areas of history are then divided down further, for instance the Stone Age – Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic.
