Scott Centenary Celebrations

The Scott Society have organised a variety of activities celebrating Captain Scott & his Antarctic Exhibition. From the Tall Ship Stavros S Niarchos, which will open to the public in Roath Dock, to a guest lecture in Cardiff University by Sir Ranulph Fiennes the events promise to educate and entertain.

In support of the Scott celebrations the Cardiff Harbour Authority have launched an outdoor exhibition, under the Barrage Sails, celebrating the life of Scott & his Antarctic Exhibition. Why not stroll across in the sun and follow his voyage?

Events include:

25th to 29th May – CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW 2010
The Cardiff County Council exhibition this year will be a courtyard garden which celebrates the epic journey undertook by Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Further information on the Chelsea

From 11th June – EXHIBITION ON THE CARDIFF BAY BARRAGE
A fascinating outdoor exhibition on the Cardiff Bay Barrage, under the Barrage sails, which charts Scott’s journey to the Antarctic. Including the departure of Terra Nova from Cardiff, the selection of his polar crew, the methods used to reach the pole and explaining the terrible weather conditions which ultimately ended the expedition.

From 11th June – EXHIBITION AT THE PIERHEAD BUILDING
The Captain Scott Society is staging a small scale exhibition of expedition photographs and artefacts within the Pierhead Building. This includes notably the Binnacle (compass tool) from the Terra Nova, the sailing vessel that took Scott and his crew to the Antarctic. 12th to 14th June – STAVROS S NIARCHOS & HMS SCOTT IN BRITANNIA QUAY
During the Centenary weekend the tall masted ship Stavros S Niarchos & the ocean survey vessel HMS Scott will be berthed in Britannia Quay. The Vessels will be opened daily for visitors from 11am until 4pm and there will be quayside markets and activities taking place. In addition the Stavros S Niarchos will be hosting sponsored mast climbs, if you are interested in this activity please contact Peter Coleman of the Tall Ships Youth Trust on peter.f.coleman@btinternet.com.

15th June – Ceremonial Departure of STAVROS S NIARCHOS
On the morning of Tuesday the 15th of June the Stavros S Niarchos will depart from Cardiff. At 8am the Royal Marine band will play alongside the vessel as she departs at 8.30am from her Cardiff berth, depicting the historic departure of Scott’s vessel Terra Nova. The flotilla will pass Penarth Head at 10.00am. Further information on the vessel and activities taking place can be found at www.captainscottsociety.com

Saturday 12th June – BRITISH ANTARTIC MONUMENT TRUST LECTURE
The British Antarctic Monument Trust are holding a fascinating lecture entitled “Heroism, Discovery, Inspiration – Captain Scott’s Legacy”. Dr David Wilson, the Antarctic historian will examine the humanitarian legacy of Scott, Dr Julian Paren will introduce a century of discovery and Felicity Aston will talk about the inspiration which drove her to lead an expedition of women to the South Pole earlier this year. The lecture will be held in the Reardon Smith Theatre within the National Museum of Wales. Tickets are from £10 and can be obtained by calling 01923 447422 or from www.antarctic-monument.org.

Tuesday 15th June – SIR RANULPH FIENNES LECTURE
Cardiff University’s Hadyn Ellis Distinguished Lecture series is proud to announce that Sir Ranulph Fiennes will be delivering his lecture entitled “Living Dangerously” about Captain Robert Falcon Scott on the 15th June to commemorate the centenary of this Antarctic expedition. It will take place in the Julian Hodge lecture Theatre and commences at 18.45pm.
