In the late 19th and early twentieth centuries poor law authorities in Bristol and Bath were pioneers in moving children out of workhouses and into small group homes. But they did not choose to do so in quite the same way. This talk will look into experiences of the authorities who managed the homes and the staff and children who lived there in each city. It will focus on the turn of the nineteenth/twentieth centuries in Bath, and before and immediately after the Second World War in Bristol and will bring out similarities and differences in each place and time period.
