Jyotsna Srikanth: Carnatic Nomad
Experience the soulful depth of South Indian classical music with Jyotsna Srikanth, Europe's foremost Carnatic violinist and a recipient of the prestigious MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire). Renowned for her technical mastery and expressive style, Jyotsna's musical journey began at home, surrounded by the legacy of women musicians. Her grandmother played the veena (Indian string instrument), and her mother was a classical vocalist and her first Guru (teacher). From the very beginning, Jyotsna was immersed in an environment where music wasn't just taught, it was lived. Hailing from Bangalore (India) where she musically trained from the age of 4, she is now based in London and brings a global perspective to an ancient tradition.
Carnatic music, is an ancient musical form known for its intricate rhythm and complex melodies. Carnatic Nomad is Jyotsna's personal journey and her mission to carry this musical heritage across borders and cultures, bridging tradition and innovation through her violin.
Accompanied by acclaimed percussionists Abhiram Sahathevan on mridangam (two-sided drum) and Ram Sivasubramaniam on kanjira (one-sided drum), this performance offers a powerful and authentic Carnatic experience. With performances at the BBC Proms, WOMAD, London Jazz Festival, and across 30+ international festivals from Lisbon to Los Angeles, Jyotsna has captivated global audiences. Expect vibrant rhythms, deep emotion, and musical storytelling that transcends language, right here in the heart of Bristol on 11 July. Tickets at £12.
