The Painter and The Patron with Callie Greaves

About

Join us for an online talk which will explore the life and work of society painter Philip de László.

Callie Greaves, who has been studying the many wonderful de László paintings found within The Portland Collection, will delve deeper into how they portray the life of the 6th Duke and Duchess of Portland at Welbeck from the late Edwardian era to post WW1. Callie will draw attention to the contrasting ways in which Philip de László and John Singer Sargent, who you could say was de László's predecessor, portrayed Duchess Winifred, wife of the 6th Duke of Portland.

Callie will also consider de László's relationship with the 6th Duke of Portland, who was his greatest British patron, as well as exploring the friendship that blossomed between them as he painted a collection of beautiful portraits of the 6th Dukes family spanning a period of over 20 years. Finally, Callie will conclude the talk by highlighting the diversity of de László by introducing us to not only some of her favourite portraits in the collection, but also to sketches and other pieces he created throughout his career.

Callie Greaves is a Welbeck Abbey Tour Guide and Front of House at the Portland Collection.
