Not all about drink! Feasts and feasting vessels of the later Iron Age

About

When we think of the Celts or Iron Age people, the stereotype is of hard-drinking warriors.

This view is to some extent reflected in the archaeological record through the existence of drinking vessels such as tankards, which would have contained up to 4 litres of alcohol, and buckets or cauldrons with far greater capacities.

In this lunchtime talk, through a series of examples, Jody Joy, Curator of British and European Iron Age Collections at the British Museum, will explore the context in which these often beautiful artefacts were made and used.

He will also highlight the importance of the feast and large social gatherings, rather than individual consumption during the later Iron Age.
