David Olusoga: Black and British

About

Gallery 20

Historian and BBC Civilisations presenter, David Olusoga, celebrates RAMM’s new Africa display and re-opened World Cultures galleries with a timely look at the long relationship between the British Isles and the peoples of Africa.

Drawing on new genealogical research, original records, and expert testimony, this story reaches back to Roman Britain and travels through the medieval imagination. Olusoga illuminates the black British history that is woven into the cultural and economic histories of the nation, and how the great 19th-century industrial boom was built on American slavery. He brings to life Elizabethan ‘blackamoors’ and the black Britons who fought at Trafalgar and in the trenches of both World Wars. It is not a singular history, but one that belongs to us all.
