Clock Tower Tours at Cardiff Castle

About

Specialist tours of Cardiff Castle's iconic Clock Tower are now available for visitors throughout the busy summer tourist season.

Within the Clock Tower are some of the most spectacularly decorated rooms in the Castle which include the Winter Smoking Room, the Bachelor Bedroom and the Summer Smoking Room which has magnificent views of the city. The tour, which involves 101 steps up a spiral staircase, also includes the Bell Chamber where visitors can view the clock mechanism in full working order.

The Clock Tower caused a sensation when it was completed in 1874, such was the extravagance of the decoration as it is decorated with life-size statues. The clock was made in 1870 by Edward Dent of London who also made ‘Big Ben’.

At over 40 metres high, the Clock Tower was the tallest structure in Cardiff in Victorian times and contains a series of apartments on no fewer than 7 floors. The tower was intended to provide a series of rooms for the bachelor, Lord Bute.

Tours will last for approximately 40 minutes, leaving at 11.30am, 12.30pm, 1.30pm, 2.30pm and 3.30pm.
