About

This April, South Devon Railway is inviting families and railway enthusiasts alike to celebrate Easter with a series of engaging events set against the stunning backdrop of Devon's scenic landscapes.

From 5th – 21st April families can embark on an Easter Trail across the railway's stations.

Participants will search for five egg images, each displaying a letter. Once all letters are collected, they can be unscrambled to form a word, leading to a special prize.

This interactive activity is a great way for children and adults alike to explore the stations and enjoy the festive season.

South Devon Railway is also hosting an Easter Gala tailored for railway enthusiasts on 18th and 19th April.

An intensive timetable will be operating on the railway, with a variety of steam and diesel locomotives pulling trains, including a freight train operating that visitors can travel on (for a small additional fee).

There will also be classic cars on display at Buckfastleigh, visits to the original signal box where you can have a go at pulling signal levers, a rare chance to see the Lee Moor locomotive display, viewing of the workshops, and much more.

For the best value, buy a ranger ticket that allows travel all day on all services. Spaces on the  freight train will be available for those with ranger tickets only, and subject to a £5 supplement, payable on a first come, first served basis.

Locomotives operating over the weekend are: 1928 built GWR “Prairie Tank” No. 5526, 1934 built GWR “Pannier Tank” No. 1369, and 1959 built diesel Class 33 No. 33002.

As the longest-established steam railway in the South West, the SDR offers a nostalgic journey along a seven-mile stretch of the former Great Western Railway branch line, originally built in 1872.

The route meanders along the scenic River Dart, connecting Buckfastleigh and Totnes, and provides an all-day, all-weather attraction suitable for families and enthusiasts alike.
