A Sporting Life

About

Sport has always formed an integral part of Army Life, with both areas being intrinsically connected and reliant on the same physical prowess, strength and sheer determination. This sporting prowess within the Armed Forces is evident in the sporting achievements of 1st The Queen’s Dragoon Guards. The regiment has markedly contributed to numerous Olympic competitions since 1959, most notably with the Equestrian Captain Mark Phillips who won an Olympic Gold medal. Even more unusually the Regiment has participated within several Winter Olympic Bobsleigh teams.

Although they have not contributed to Olympic Sports, The Royal Welsh have produced a high calibre of Rugby players, winning the Army Cup three times over the last four years and producing star players who have represented the British Army and the sport internationally. To celebrate the 2012 Olympics, this exhibition takes a look at the sporting achievements of our Regiments.
