You are here: Hudson's > Mrs Hudson Says... > Mrs Hudson Says... September 22
Every month, Mrs Hudson, along with her three children and Dinky the Irish Wolfhound investigate the best family and dog friendly heritage attractions that the UK has to offer.
Read on to see where the Hudsons have been this month.
After the craziness of the school holidays, it was nice to wave the kids off to school and have a bit of a rest this month! I forgot how quiet the house could be with just Dinky and myself pottering around!
Don’t worry though, September wasn’t without its excitements, though it did end up taking a very different turn than we initially expected. Ever since the dates were announced, we were planning to enjoy as many of the local Heritage Open Day events as we could fit into the two-week festival. Every year there is always a host of fascinating things to discover and many of the events and activities are exclusive to the festival and are only open for a limited time. This year, we really wanted to visit the Railway Village Museum in Swindon and the Bradford on Avon Lock Up – the town’s former bridge prison cell but other than those two, we were happy to just do whatever we fancied – sadly though, due to the sudden passing of Queen Elizabeth II, many of our local events were postponed or cancelled. It has certainly been a fascinating but sad time for the whole country as we watched the ceremonial events unfolding over the month. If we’d have had the chance, I would have liked to have taken the children to London to see the tributes at Buckingham Palace and maybe join in the mourners who visited the lying-in state. As sad as it has been to witness the end of an era, I am excited for the children to have been a part of history and for them to experience the changes that are to come.
Florence in particular loves reading about the kings and queens of times past and this, as well as the Jubilee earlier in the year, she has learned a lot about the Windsors and the protocols that we are seeing playing out now. She was very excited to tell me (and a bemused Dinky) that there are in fact two Irish Wolfhounds that serve in the British Army on behalf of the royal family!
Hopefully there won’t be any unforeseen national events in the coming months, so we can enjoy some of the local Halloween events and learn more about our so-called haunted locations.
