Every month, Mrs Hudson, along with her three children and Dinky the Irish Wolfhound investigate the best family and dog friendly heritage attractions that the UK has to offer.
Read on to see where the Hudsons have been this month!
How lovely were the Jubilee celebrations at the start of the month? The children and I spent the bank holiday weekend finishing up our jaunt to Wales to visit my parents and it was so lovely seeing all the little communities coming together to celebrate the Queen’s amazing achievement and all the hard work she has done over the past seventy years. It was especially nice for my parents as they were around when she became queen – it’s like all the generations of the family have grown up with her and it was such a nice way to kick off the summer months.
We spent spend the Thursday and Friday in Wales and made the journey back on the Saturday, so we were nice and refreshed for some more local Jubilee fun on the Sunday before the kids headed back to school. This term, the boys are studying the Stone Age and Iron Age in their history lessons, so it looks like another trip to Stone Henge is in order in the next month or so! Florence on the other hand came home from school to inform us all that she had learned about the Battle of Hastings and is voting for us to head there during the summer – looks like I have a trip to the east coast to plan!
With the kids back at school, it was nice to relax a little more this month, especially with the nice weather we had towards the middle and end of the month. It was lovely to be able to finally get that picnic in Bath – we’ve been trying to do that for some time now. We headed into town after the kids finished school on what turned out to be the hottest day of the year, so we left the dog behind and ended up going on a hunt for ice cream to cool down before heading home.
It’s actually been nice to stay close to home with the good weather – we decided to take the kids paddleboarding in Bradford on Avon, a beautiful town not that far from where we live. There are sessions available for kids of all ages and abilities – so it's something nice that we can all do together and something we loved being able to do last summer. While we were there, we stopped by the Iron Duke – Bertie has gotten very into learning about industry after his visit to the mines during our trip to Wales. The Iron Duke can be found in the middle of the town and is basically a rubber rolling machine that was left over from the town’s rubber industry during the Victorian times. Apparently, this was the first one of its kind in the whole of Europe, so although it isn’t much to look at, it is actually pretty impressive. There is plenty to discover here at the local museum which is open on Saturdays and the Lock Up, which we will be visiting in September as it is open for the annual Heritage Open Days.
I suppose now we had better start planning for July and the start of the summer holidays – we’ll catch you again next month.
