Every month, Mrs Hudson, along with her three children and Dinky the Irish Wolfhound investigate the best family and dog-friendly heritage attractions that the UK has to offer.
And just like that the summer holidays are on the horizon yet again, it’s scary how quickly time is passing, Florence will be starting her GCSEs soon and the twins are heading to secondry school! If, like me, you’re dreading the days when the kids won’t want to head out on day trips, here are some suggestions of heritage destinations you can enjoy together.
Scotland
Inchcolm island and Abbey | Queensferry, nr Edinburgh
Founded by David I, Inchcolm Island is home to one of the best preserved monastic buildings in the country. Not only can you explore the abbey and spot the seals and other creatures that call the island home but you can also explore the various coastal defences left over from the two world wars.
Wales
Blaenavon World Heritage Site | Monmouthshire
This UNESCO World Heritage Site was at one time a hub for coal and iron production. The site features several activities and attractions, including the Big Pit National Coal Musuem and the Blaenavon Ironworks.
England
The Roman Baths | Bath, Somerset
The whole city of Bath is well worth a visit, with its incredible Georgian architecture and of course, the Roman Baths. There are a host of activities for the kids and you can even sample some of the healing waters during your visit.
Blists Hill Victorian Town | Shropshire
If you want a real blast from the past, visit here. The whole town is a an attraction featuring historic buildings and actors in costume, so you can truly immerse yourself in the Victorian era
Northern Ireland
Navan Centre and Fort | County Armagh
A sacred location in Irish mythology, the Navan Centre was hugely important during the Iron Age and is a great place to learn more about the Iron Age in Ireland.
