One of my favourite things about the summer months is being able to spend them with the kids, with no school and (hopefully) good weather, there is nothing better than heading out together with the family. This summer we’ve really tried to get all three kids and the dog out and about, so I thought we would put together some of our favourite dog friendly places to visit this summer.
If you’re looking for great family days out where your dog is also welcome, check out some of your local National Trust properties. The majority of the National Trust’s sites are dog friendly, especially if they have lots of parks or gardens nearby.
Croome in Worcestershire is dog friendly and is a fascinating place to spend the day. This secret wartime airbase is now a hub of activity and with all the usual activities to enjoy and the park to explore, the dogs and the kids will have a lovely time here. If you’re further south, Ham House in Richmond is another great option for a dog friendly day out.
Ightham Mote in Kent is welcoming for dogs to visit the surrounding countryside all year around and their gardens in the off season, just be aware that only guide dogs can enter the house itself.
For those of you near London, Syon House and Park is a must visit. My kids, especially Florence, love trips to Syon House and this summer, there is a host of fun things to see and do. The gardens are open from Wednesday to Sunday and bank holidays in August, the house is open for guided tours on Wednesday and Thursday and for self guided visitors on Sunday and Bank Holidays. Throughout the summer there are a host of family friendly activities and workshops and on September 9th, they are hosting Syon Bark – a day just for your furry friends!
Another place with lots of grounds and parklands for you and your dog to explore is Kelmarsh Hall. Just keep your dogs on a lead while you’re visiting and be aware that they cannot go into the hall, unless they are a registered assistance dog.
In Leeds, there is Lotherton a lovely country estate, historic house and wildlife centre. Dogs are welcome to explore as much of the estate as they like and the team even have a list of recommended walking routes so you can be sure of having the most fun possible!
We obviously can’t speak for every dog, but our Irish Wolfhound, Dinky, has been to several of these places and has had a whale of a time! Looking for more top tips of heritage places you can take your dog? Click here.
