In the areas that the Vikings took control, there was a huge change in culture and society, particularly in the north of England where their hold was stronger. The place names of Northern and Eastern England derive from Old Norse, for instance, places like Grimsby and Scunthorpe. Several words that are part of northern slang can also be linked back to this time, examples would be the world dale which is the Old Norse for valley. Other English words, like window, husband and egg also have a basis in Norse.
While the Romans helped develop towns and cities, the Vikings helped develop their economies with trade booming after their arrival. Places like Lincoln, Derby and Nottingham became important centres for manufacture and trade and there are archaeological remains proving that Viking settlements were populated with industry.
