Throughout history, there have been conflicts involving Britain. In the early days of Great Britain being established, there were wars between England and Scotland and England and Wales. The Tudors conquered Ireland leading to the island becoming part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. From 1639 – 1660, there was also the Wars of the Three Kingdoms which involved the various nations in Great Britain.
Great Northern War 1700 – 1721
Britain played a minor role but were part of the victorious alliance. The outcome of the war included the decline of the Swedish Empire and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and established Russia as a new European super power.
The War of the Spanish Succession 1701-1714
The war included Queen Anne’s War and saw Britain allied with others against France, Spain and Bavaria. The outcome led to the Treaty of Utrecht and saw Philip V recognised as the King of Spain.
Civil War against Caribbean piracy 1715-1726
Great Britain fought against the Republic of Pirates and saw piracy being outlawed and the disestablishment of the Republic of Pirates. A number of well known pirates were defeated including Edward Teach, Calico Jack, Black Bart and Edward Low. The war saw the end of the Golden Age of Piracy
Nineteen Uprising 1717 – 1720
Taking place during the War of the Quadruple Alliance, it resulted in a Jacobite invasion being defeated and the Treaty of the Hague.
Drummer’s War 1721 – 1725
Battle between various colonies leading to Britain recognising the rights of the region’s indigenous inhabitants.
The War of Jenkins’ Ear 1739 – 1748
Great Britain took on the Spanish Empire. The war ended without an obvious victor.
The War of the Austrian Succession 1740 – 1748
Britain fought on the side of Austria but the war ended in an impasse
Seven Year’s War 1756 – 1763
France ended up ceding territory, including Canada, to the victors, which included Great Britain.
Anglo-Cherokee War 1758-1761
British forces in America fought against Cherokee tribes, the British won and installed a pro-British leaders.
Tacky’s War 1760
A war between British run Jamaica and Ashanti slaves who had rebelled, the rebels were defeated and Tacky was killed.
Pontiac’s Rebellion 1763-1766
Great Britain and the Confederation of First Nation Tribes fought resulting in British policy charges.
American Revolutionary War 1775-83
The war saw the British retreating and recognising 13 North American colonies as an independent Union. This kicked off the Anglo French and the Anglo Spanish Wars which saw an exchange in colonies in various areas of the world.
French Revolutionary Wars 1793-1802
Involving countries from around the globe, the war ended with the Treaty of Amiens which recognised the victory of a French Republic and Britain’s withdrawal from Egypt.
Second Maroon War 1795 – 1796
Great Britain and British Jamaica against Jamaican Maroons, which saw Maroon defeated and the return of any runaway slaves.
Hewkesbury and Nepean Wars 1795 – 1816
The British were named the victors, but it resulted in several Aboriginal tribes being removed from their land.
Anglo-Spanish 1796-1808
Fought in the English Channel and the Atlantic Ocean among other locations, there was no definitive outcome.
Kandyan Wars 1796 -1818
The war ended 2357 years of Sinhalese Independence
Irish Rebellion of 1798
The Rebellion was defeated and the 1801 Act of Union came into effect.
4th Anglo-Mysore War 1798 – 1799
Involving the East India Company, the conflict ended with the annexation of Mysore by Britain and their allies.
British Expedition to Ceylon 1803
The conflict was the last Tamil resistance against Colonial rule.
Anglo-Turkish War 1807-1809
The battle between the UK and the Ottoman Empire ended with a Turkish military victory and the Treaty of the Dardanelles
Gunboat War 1807-1814
Fought between UK and Denmark-Norway, the war ended up with the splitting of Norway and Denmark and the Treaty of Kiel.
War of 1812 1812-1815
Fought between the UK and US and saw land swapping ownership. Eventually, US land was returned and the US didn’t invade Canada.
Hundred Days War 1815
General of France was defeated and slavery was abolished.
Baptist War 1831-1832
Another war against rebelling slaves in Jamaica
Anglo-Zulu War 1879
War ended with Zululand being annexed.
First Boer War 1880-1889
Ended with South African Republic granted self-government
Second Boer War 1899-1902
The war ended with a British victory and saw all Boers surrender arms and swear allegiance to the crown. The Dutch language was permitted in education.
Irish War of Independence 1919-1921
Dominion status for 26 counties of Southern Ireland was the Irish Free State and the 6 counties of Northern Ireland remain part of the UK.
Suez Crisis 1956-1957
The Egyptians won a political victory, but the coalition won the military victory.
Border Campaign 1956-1962
Conflict between the UK and IRA, which resulted in a British campaign
First Cod War 1958-1961
Between the UK and Iceland, Iceland expands its territorial waters to 12 nautical miles
The Troubles 1968 – 1998
Fighting broke out between the UK and various factions of the IRA. It ended in a stalemate and the Good Friday Agreement. Devolution in Northern Ireland and cross border cooperation came about.
Second and Third Cod Wars 1972 – 1976
Iceland’s fishery zone is extended further.
Falklands War 1982
UK vs Argentina over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands.
Gulf War 1990-1991
UK and US join France and other Middle Eastern countries to fight Iraq which results in Kuwait regaining its independence.
Bosnian War 1992 – 1995
UK was involved as part of NATO.
Operation Desert Fox 1998
US and UK joined forces against Iraq and were largely successful
Kosovo War 1998-1999
UK also involved as part of NATO, war ended with Kosovo being occupied by NATO forces.
War in Afghanistan 2001-2021
Fight against the Taliban militia. The Taliban ended up regaining power in 2021.
Iraq War 2003-2009
Joint operation to overthrow the Ba’ath government. Britain and allies occupied Iraq and though an initial success, saw the rise of Islamic State.
Libyan Civil War 2011
NATO and UN forces against Pro Gaddafi forces, resulted in Gaddafi being killed and a new council taking control.
Operation Shader
UK joined a group of other nations to take on Boko Haram and Islamic State in Syria. Operations are ongoing.
