Turner: Northern Exposure at the Mercer Art Gallery

About

In 1797 JMW Turner embarked on an eight week tour of the North of England that would transform him from an architectural draftsman to a poet of the landscape.  At the time, he was just 22 years old.

Northern Exposure is an exhibition of some of Turner’s output during this time and includes watercolours, engravings and colour studies that set the tone for Turners style in years to come.

In later years, Turner acknowledged the tour and the work it inspired as being the pivotal moment that established his lifelong career.   It was during these months in the north that Turner began to explore how light played in atmospheric conditions, how the cloud and water held the light and colour at a particular moment in time.

The Harrogate show of this tour includes extra works from the surrounding area including nearby Bolton Abbey and Kirkstall Abbey.

Force of Nature

This exhibition, exclusive to Harrogate, explores Turners legacy among modern artist and features collections of work by several local artists with a mixture of loaned works and pieces from the Mercer Gallery collection.

Force of Nature shows how artists have continued to explore light and landscape, capturing the emotion of natural scenes and manmade features through photography, ink and oils.
