The Eastney Gas Engine House is a time capsule displaying Victorian and Edwardian engineering at its finest. The engine house has unique and very large Crossley Town gas-powered sewage pumps along with many other stationary engines which can still be seen in action. Seen in the context of the social pressures the area was experiencing at the time, you can get an insight into Portsmouth at a time of rapid growth and social change.
Local volunteers work at the site every week throughout the year keeping the wheels turning and you can join them for a look around between 10am and 12 noon every Wednesday morning. All are welcome but children must be supervised.
There is no charge to visit the engine house but donations help the volunteers to keep the wheels turning. You are asked to follow all relevant Covid and safety guidance.
