Artefacts and artistry: drawing and painting inspired by RAMM’s collections (8 week course)

Use RAMM’s collections as source material and inspiration for developing your drawing and painting skills. Each week we will explore an area of interest, including natural history, ceramics, costume and archaeology. The session will begin by looking at artists and designers (both contemporary and historical) and we will then go into the galleries and sketch, returning to the studio to paint from these drawings.

Week 1. Butterflies, beetles, birds and sea-life. The work of Henry Gosse.

Week 2. Ceramics. From Roman pottery to harvest jugs. Considering still life, the domestic to the decorative.

Week 3. Gods and goddesses, power figures, systems of belief and symbolism.

Week 4. Decorative art, fashion and the figure. Considering the body, form and fashion.

Week 5. Fossils, bones and big animals. Art from pre-history through to today.

Week 6. Metaphors, meanings, hieroglyphics, typography and text in ancient worlds and contemporary art.

Week 7. Costume, armour and ritual, pattern in cloth and the abstract, colour, form and geometry.

Week 8. Architecture, painting RAMM. Metaphors of the house both inside and out.

We will have a small range of acrylics and brushes, or you can bring your own paints of choice.

Please also bring an A3 sketchbook, sketching materials.

Course tutor Nicci Wonnacott BA (HONS) Fine art/Contextual Practice. P.G.C.E. has been delivering courses at RAMM for many years. Nicci has an excellent knowledge of RAMM’s collections, art history, painting, drawing, textile art and design.
