About

Discover 500 years of history in the stunning Tudor Jacobean mansion house of Temple Newsam, set within 1500 acres of Capability Brown landscaped gardens, parks and scenic woodland.

Explore over 40 rooms filled with fine and decorative art including an extensive collection of silverware, textiles, ceramics and furniture. If you’re planning a visit then why not book ahead and go under the ropes and behind the scenes on a Temple Newsam tour? Uncover the secrets of past residents who lived and worked on the estate including the ill fated Lord Darnley, husband of the notorious Mary Queen of Scots.

Temple Newsam is also home to a working rare breed farm dating back to the 17th century. It’s actually one of the largest rare breed centres in the UK! Explore the cobbled streets and historic outbuildings and get up close to the animals including piglets, sheep, donkeys, geese and guinea pigs! There’s lots of educational events and family fun activities throughout the year, including opportunities to get hands-on with the animals and learn what was life was like to work on the farm.

The estate also boasts a variety of nature trails and stunning grounds and gardens. A short stroll from the house and farm, visitors are greeted by the much loved Rhododendron Walk, planted with material collected by previous owners of Temple Newsam. Beautifully developed over a number of years, it’s a truly stunning sight during the summer time. A short walk away within the Walled Garden, discover 800 yards of outstanding herbaceous borders, rose beds and herbs set within the beautifully aged 18th century structure, a truly peaceful spot to take a break.

Meanwhile Temple Newsam Tea Rooms serves up a variety of locally sourced food and drinks. Take your pick from light lunches to classic cakes and pastries. In the warmer months, take a pew in the cobbled courtyard and soak up the historic surroundings. There’s also an onsite giftshop, an amphitheatre and an eclectic events programme including festivals, family fun activities during the school holidays plus loads more.
