Raby is without doubt one of the most impressive lived in castles in England. Built mainly in the 14th century by the Nevill family on the site of an earlier manor house, it remained in their ownership until 1569. Since 1626 to the present day it has been the home of the Vane family.
It was the childhood home of Cicely, Rose of Raby, mother of Kings Edward IV and Richard III, scene of the plotting of the Rising of the North and a Parliamentary stronghold during the Civil War.

Despite its grand exterior, Raby houses a fabulous art collection and sumptuous interiors. Treasures include an important collection of Meissen porcelain, tapestries, furniture, furnishings and paintings.

Raby Castle is situated amidst a 200 acre Deer Park in the foothills of the North Pennines, where Red and Fallow Deer and Longhorn Cattle graze. Beautiful walled gardens with formal lawns, rose gardens and ornamental pond frame picturesque views of the Castle. The 18th century stable block contains a horse drawn carriage collection and the Stable Tearooms and Gift Shop.

Raby Estates venison and game sold in tearooms. No photography or video filming is permitted inside. Colour illustrated guidebook on sale. Suitablity for the Disabled: WCs. Refreshments/Cafe/Tearoom: Licensed. Guided Tours: By arrangement for groups (20+) or min charge. VIP & Standard Castle Tours available. Tour time 1½ hrs.
