Background information:

Set within the heart of the Suffolk countryside, Helmingham Hall Gardens offers a captivating blend of heritage, horticulture and history. This privately owned estate has been home to the Tollemache family for over 500 years and remains one of the finest examples of a moated Tudor hall in England. While the Hall itself is not open to the public, the award-winning Grade I listed gardens are a true destination in their own right, lovingly designed under the guidance of Lady Tollemache, a Chelsea Gold Medal-winning garden designer and now maintained by the team of talented gardeners.

From May to September, the gardens welcome visitors from Sunday to Thursday, 10am to 5pm, providing the perfect setting for a peaceful day out, whether you’re an avid gardener, a lover of historic landscapes, or simply seeking beauty and tranquillity.

After wandering the gardens, guests can retreat to the Courtyard Café, nestled within the walls of the old stable yard. The café serves a menu of seasonal light lunches, cakes, teas, and barista coffees. Whether you’re enjoying a slice of homemade cake or a pot of tea with a view, the relaxed and friendly atmosphere makes it a much-loved stop for returning guests.

Next door, visitors can browse three charming and independent shops bringing together local makers and artisan products, produce from the estate through to unique gifts, there is something for everyone.

The Festival of Classic and Sports Cars which welcomes over 1,200 exhibition cars from classics through to modern supercars, live music, food, drink, an artisan market and children’s entertainment. The event also includes the famous crowd pleasing driveway run.

The most event at Helmingham happens outside of the summer, The Illuminated Garden trail, voted one of the best in the UK welcomes over 30,000 people through the gardens during November and December. The gardens are transformed into a magical trail of light and sound.

Driving to Helmingham Hall Gardens is straightforward, but it does involve using rural B‑roads for the final approach, so it’s worth planning your route in advance and using a sat‑nav (postcode IP14 6EF) or following the brown tourist signs for “Helmingham Hall Gardens.” Parking is free on site.

From the A14 (west or east)

  1. Leave the A14 at the A140 (Norwich) junction near Claydon.
  2. Follow the A140 north towards Norwich for about 5 miles.
  3. Turn right onto the A1120 signposted Stonham Aspal/Framlingham.
  4. After roughly a mile, turn right onto the B1079 signposted Grundisburgh/Otley.
  5. Follow the B1079 to the Otley Turn, then follow the brown signs into the estate.

This route brings you off the main trunk road quickly and onto the local B‑roads leading to the hall.

From Ipswich (south)

  • Head north out of Ipswich on the B1079 (signed Grundisburgh and Otley). Continue through Grundisburgh and Otley, then follow signs for Helmingham. The entrance is on the right just after the “Otley Turn.”

From Norwich and the north

  • Take the A140 south towards Ipswich. At Stonham Aspal, turn left onto the A1120. After about a mile turn right onto the B1079 (signed Grundisburgh/Otley) and follow brown signs to Helmingham Hall Gardens.

From Stowmarket or Bury St Edmunds

  • From Stowmarket, follow the A1120 east through Earl Stonham and Stonham Aspal. Turn right onto the B1079 and follow signs. An alternative rural route follows the B1078 and local lanes: turn off the B1078 onto Church Road, then right onto High Street, then right onto Stonewall Hill towards Gosbeck, finally turning left for the gardensngs.org.uk.

From the A12 (south/east)

  • Join the A14 westbound at the A12/A14 junction near Woodsbridge and follow the A14 to the A140 exit, then follow the directions above. Alternatively, from the A12 you can join the B1078 near Wickham Market and pick up local signage through Otley.

Because the final approach uses country lanes, keep an eye out for brown tourist signs. Sat‑navs should bring you directly to the entrance using the postcode IP14 6EF. For up‑to‑date roadworks or diversions, check local travel information before your journey.
