Set within the heart of the Suffolk countryside, Helmingham Hall Gardens offers a captivating blend of heritage, horticulture and history. This privately owned estate has been home to the Tollemache family for over 500 years and remains one of the finest examples of a moated Tudor hall in England. While the Hall itself is not open to the public, the award-winning Grade I listed gardens are a true destination in their own right — lovingly designed, under the guidance of Lady Tollemache, a Chelsea Gold Medal-winning garden designer and now maintained by the team of talented gardeners.
From May to September, the gardens welcome visitors from Sunday to Thursday, 10am to 5pm, providing the perfect setting for a peaceful day out, whether you're an avid gardener, a lover of historic landscapes, or simply seeking beauty and tranquillity.
After wandering the gardens, guests can retreat to the Courtyard Café, nestled within the walls of the old stable yard. The café serves a menu of seasonal light lunches, cakes, teas, and barista coffees. Whether you're enjoying a slice of homemade cake or a pot of tea with a view, the relaxed and friendly atmosphere makes it a much-loved stop for returning guests.
Next door, visitors can browse three charming and independent shops bringing together local makers and artisan products, produce from the estate through to unique gifts, there is something for everyone.
In addition to regular garden openings, Helmingham hosts an exciting calendar of events throughout the season.
Highlights include the Plant Fair & Artisan Market, which draws in garden lovers from across the region.
The Festival of Classic and Sports Cars which welcomes over 1,200 exhibition cars from classics through to modern supercars, live music, food, drink, an artisan market and children’s entertainment. The event also includes the famous crowd pleasing driveway run.
The most event at Helmingham happens outside of the summer, The Illuminated Garden trail, voted one of the best in the UK welcomes over 30,000 people through the gardens during November and December. The gardens are transformed into a magical trail of light and sound.
There are plenty of other events through the year which include Music in the Gardens, Midsummer Nights and Adventure Cinema.
Helmingham Hall Gardens is more than just a beautiful day out, it’s a place where heritage comes to life, where gardens evolve with the seasons, and where every visit reveals something new. For lovers of history, horticulture, and rural England at its finest, Helmingham is a must-visit.
We look forward to welcoming you between May and September, Sunday to Thursday, 10am to 5pm, and at our weekend events throughout the summer.
Come and experience the charm, character, and quiet magic of Helmingham for yourself.
