Home to the Proby family since 1660, Elton Hall is an enchanting house that has evolved throughout the centuries. Every room is packed with magnificent treasures – antique furniture, porcelain and a superb collection of fine paintings. These include important works by Old Masters dating from the late fifteenth century, remarkable works by Landseer, Millais and Alma Tadema, as well as British artists, Reynolds, Constable and Gainsborough. The library houses one of the most important collections in private hands, including Henry VIII’s prayer book.
Acknowledged as an RHS Partner Garden, the formal gardens at Elton Hall have been lovingly restored over the past 40 years. Today, visitors can see an ever-changing herbaceous flower garden, a sunken garden, topiary, a shrubbery and a Gothic Orangery built to celebrate the millennium. Elton Hall was proud recipient of the Judges’ Choice Award in the Historic Houses Garden of the Year Awards 2021.
Visits on public open days are free-flow with knowledgeable guides and stewards on hand to provide information about the house and collection. The gardens may be enjoyed at leisure.
For groups, private guided tours are offered outside of public opening hours. Tours of the private gardens are led by the Head Gardener.
