About

York Gate Garden is an incredible one-acre garden tucked away behind the ancient church in Adel (worth a visit itself), on the northern outskirts of Leeds (LS16).  In 2017 York Gate was voted the '7th best garden to visit in the UK' in The Times.  It was created by the Spencer family as their own private garden between 1951 and 1994, when it was then bequeathed to Perennial, the UK's only horticulturist's charity. We open York Gate Garden for you to enjoy on 5 afternoons a week from April through to September. Please check our web site for our exact opening times before setting off.
We have a cafe offering light lunches and afternoon teas, as well as a gift shop and small plant nursery for you to take home a peice of York Gate.

The garden reflects many of the characteristics of an Arts and Crafts garden. It's divided up into forteen garden rooms, which are linked by clever vistas. It's a garden of immense style and craftsmanship, widely recognised as one of the most innovative small gardens of the period. Thousands of visitors come each year, and whether you come just to enjoy the tranquil beauty of the garden, or if you are a keen gardener or designer yourself, you can pass a very pleasant hour or two here soaking in the magic of York Gate.

In 2016 Perennial were awarded a Heritage Lottery grant to research, capture and preserve the story of York Gate and its creation. See emerging presentations of the Spencer family's story as the York Gate volunteer team work hard on researching, archiving, cataloguing, digitilising and presenting the heritage for you to enjoy.  Some of the highlights of the garden:

• a Pavement Maze • the Old Orchard • Pinetum and Arbour • Woodland Dell • Nut Walk • Sybil’s Garden • Canal Garden • Fern Border • Herb Garden and Summerhouse • Alley and Sundial • White and Silver Garden • Kitchen Garden • Paved Garden • Front Garden
