Seen from above Sir Arthur Tansley thought it the finest view in Britain and it prompted him to start the conservation movement, and it is said that King Charles II riding the Monarch's Way in 1651 drew rein here and exclaimed "England is surely worth fighting for" and I am sure you will agree. The views are spectacular. You can continue your walk over the Downs to Stoughton and Walderton, both with pubs for refreshment or extend your walk to The White Horse at Chilgrove for another convenient accommodation stopover to further explore the Downs.
