Principal country residence of the Prince Bishops since 1190, the castle is now the home to the Bishop of Durham. A fine example of architectural history, the state rooms display treasures left behind including original works of art, the collection of 17thC Spanish paintings by Francisco de Zurbaran and portraits of past Bishops. St Peters Chapel, one of the largest private chapels in Europe.

The Castle & Library Tea Room are now closed until 2018 as the Castle's re-development begins.

Nearest station is Bishop Auckland Station. Proceed along Newgate Street to the Market Place, Castle is through clocktower gate in far corner of the square.

* The Castle and Library Tea Room are now closed for restoration until 2018. There are some seasonal events taking place during the Christmas Period & St Peters' Chapel is open on weekends until 17 December 2016.
