The Izaak Walton Hotel

The Izaak Walton Hotel lies just above the river Dove in the idyllic hills of Dovedale. Originally built as a country house in the 17th century, the hotel retains much of its original charm. There are magnificent views of Thorpe Cloud and the surrounding hills from all the public rooms and from many bedrooms. Named after the author of the Compleat Angler, the hotel owns fishing rights on four miles of the Staffordshire bank of one of Britain’s finest trout streams. Tuition is available from the resident fisherman. Quad biking, archery and clay pigeon shooting can also be arranged by the hotel. There are idyllic, well marked, country walks starting at the hotel, with the famous Dovedale Stepping Stones just ten minutes away. The Izaak Walton, is a great spot for a wedding, team building exercise or leisure break with the many attractions of Derbyshire within easy driving distance.

Simon Harrison has garnered two AA Rosettes for his skill in the Haddon restaurant. Starter might be poached langoustine with sea vegetables and bisque, followed by fillet of Derbyshire beef. The Dovedale Bar, adorned with fishing memorabilia, serves a selection of lighter bites, with a children's menu available. Derbyshire cream tea has also established itself as a favourite with locals and visitors alike.

Most of the 38 well appointed bedrooms have views over the garden and Dovedale peaks. These include three four-poster rooms, four family rooms and nine superior bedrooms. These come with many little extras, including Liberty & Green bathroom products, slippers & bathrobes. Two rooms are located in the original 17thC wing, with original oak beams and window seats.

Haddon Hall, Chatsworth, Renshaw Hall, Melbourne Hall and Tissington Hall (and well dressings) are nearby. The Tissington (bicycle) Trail passes near the hotel. Ilam Park is next door with its Paradise Walk to summit with great views.
