Background information:

A Living Monument of Devon’s History
Part Grade I listed and part Scheduled Ancient Monument, Tiverton Castle is a remarkable property where history is palpable at every turn. Originally built in 1106 on the orders of Henry I, the castle was the seat of the powerful medieval Earls of Devon and even housed a Plantagenet Princess. Over the centuries, it was rebuilt and enlarged, and its walls witnessed dramatic events, including a siege during the English Civil War when Fairfax’s forces captured the castle after a lucky shot struck the drawbridge chain.

A Fortress Steeped in History
Few buildings evoke such an immediate sense of history as Tiverton Castle. Visitors can explore medieval architecture alongside later adaptations, gaining insight into its defensive and domestic evolution. The interiors are filled with fascinating furnishings and exhibits that reflect the colourful development of this venerable estate, from its Norman origins to its role in civil conflict. The Civil War Armoury is a particular highlight, with some pieces available for visitors to try on, offering an engaging experience for all ages.

Gardens and Grounds
Surrounding the castle are beautiful walled gardens, carefully maintained and constantly evolving through ongoing conservation efforts. Sweeping lawns, ancient trees, and seasonal plantings create a serene and picturesque environment for strolling, photography, or simply relaxing in the tranquil setting. The castle’s grounds combine natural beauty with historical features, making them an integral part of the visitor experience.

A Private Home and Heritage Experience
Nowadays, Tiverton Castle is a peaceful, private house, yet open to the public by arrangement. Visitors can enjoy guided tours to explore its interiors, exhibitions, and gardens, or wander at their own pace. The castle also offers three self-contained apartments for those wishing to stay overnight within these historic walls.
