Background information:

Sissinghurst Castle is more than just a garden, it’s the backdrop to a diverse history.

Over the centuries, the site has been transformed from one astonishing state to another, including working farmland, a Tudor manor house, a prison during the Seven Years’ War, a workhouse, a base for the Women’s Land Army and, most recently, the last home of author Vita Sackville-West and her diplomat husband Harold Nicolson.

Today, this world-renowned garden is enjoyed by thousands of visitors every year, following in the footsteps of its creators. Explore the ‘garden rooms’, each boasting beautiful vistas and colourful planting schemes. Or why not take in the panoramic views of the surrounding landscape from the very top of the Elizabethan Tower, which remains a grand centrepiece of the garden.

Discover aspects of our history in annual exhibitions, learn about our sustainable practices in the organic vegetable garden, wander around the lakes and woodland, and more.

Enjoy a sweet treat or hearty lunch in the café and granary restaurant, browse through our selection of indulgent products in the plant and gift shops, or find your new favourite read in the second-hand bookshop.

Sissinghurst Castle is a romantic retreat for anyone wishing to wile away an hour or two in the serene Kent countryside.
