Background information:

Situated in the beautiful South Hams area of Devon, and set within its own parkland, Hemerdon House is a late 18th-century Georgian manor built by the ancestors of the current owners. Steeped in history and family tradition, the estate offers visitors a rare opportunity to explore both the elegant interiors and expansive grounds, guided by the family themselves on selected days of the year.

A Family Home Through Generations

Hemerdon House has remained under the stewardship of the same family for generations, preserving a rich heritage that reflects both local and national history. Visitors can experience the personal stories of the family through the house’s furnishings, paintings, and decorative objects, offering insight into the lives of Devonshire gentry over the centuries.

Historic Interiors and Collections

Inside the manor, the house contains an extensive collection of naval and military mementos, paintings, furniture, china, and silver, all accumulated by the family over many generations. Each room tells a story, allowing guests to step back in time and explore the evolving tastes, achievements, and lifestyle of a Devonshire family across the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.

Gardens and Parkland

Set within its own private parkland, Hemerdon House offers visitors the chance to enjoy tranquil walks, manicured lawns, and scenic vistas of the surrounding South Hams countryside. The grounds complement the historic interiors, providing a peaceful and picturesque setting for reflection, photography, and exploration.

Guided Tours and Visitor Experience

On selected days, members of the family lead guided tours of the interior, sharing their knowledge of the house’s history, architecture, and collections. Visitors are also welcome to explore the gardens and parkland on these days, making Hemerdon House an intimate and engaging heritage experience.
