Set within sweeping parkland in the heart of the Northamptonshire countryside, Althorp House is one of England’s most distinguished historic estates. Home to the Spencer family since 1508, the house remains a private residence while also welcoming visitors to explore its remarkable heritage, architecture and art collections.
For more than five centuries, Althorp has been closely connected with British history. Generations of the Spencer family have shaped the estate, preserving its historic character while maintaining it as a much-loved family home. Today it is the seat of the Earl Spencer and is widely known for its association with Diana, Princess of Wales, whose final resting place lies on a peaceful island within the estate grounds.
Althorp is set within 550 acres of tranquil walled parkland, forming part of a much larger 13,000-acre estate of farmland, woodland and landscaped grounds. The estate lies in an area of unspoilt countryside between Northampton and Rugby, offering a peaceful rural setting that has changed little over the centuries.
Visitors approaching the house pass through carefully maintained parkland designed to complement the architecture of the house. Mature trees, sweeping lawns and ornamental lakes create a landscape that reflects the long tradition of English country house estates.
One of the greatest attractions of Althorp is its world-class private art collection, considered among the finest in Britain. Over centuries the Spencer family assembled an extraordinary collection of paintings, furniture and decorative arts that reflect both artistic excellence and the family’s long-standing role in British society.
Among the highlights are works by some of the most celebrated European artists, including:
Peter Paul Rubens
Sir Joshua Reynolds
George Stubbs
Thomas Gainsborough
Anthony van Dyck
These masterpieces hang within beautifully preserved historic interiors, allowing visitors to experience the collection in the context of the house for which it was originally assembled.
Although Althorp has evolved over the centuries, the house retains the elegance and balance of a classic English country estate. Inside, visitors discover grand state rooms, historic portraits and collections that tell the story of the Spencer family and their influence across British history.
Despite its scale and significance, Althorp remains very much a lived-in family home. This sense of continuity gives the estate a distinctive atmosphere – a place where history, heritage and family life remain closely intertwined.
During selected periods of the year, visitors can explore Althorp House and its grounds, discovering centuries of history alongside peaceful parkland walks. The estate also hosts exhibitions, seasonal events and opportunities to learn more about the Spencer family and the history of the house.
Whether visiting for its art collection, its historic interiors or its beautiful rural setting, Althorp offers a unique insight into one of England’s most enduring country estates.
