About

Enjoy a day trip to Chatsworth House and Gardens, the magnificent home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire.

Known by many as the ‘Palace of the Peak’, this popular tourist attraction is set in the heart of the Peak District National Park in Derbyshire. Sitting on the banks of the River Derwent, this magnificent building has been occupied by the earls and dukes of Devonshire for centuries.

There are more than 30 rooms to explore in the main house, the lavish apartments and staterooms are filled with priceless paintings and period furniture.

During 2017, Chatsworth is hosting ‘House Style’, a unique and remarkable exhibition featuring a collection of five centuries of Chatsworth fashion, imaginatively displayed throughout the house. The collection features clothes and other personal items from the private collection of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, and items loaned from other costume and fashion collections in London.

Outside, Chatsworth astounds at every turn. There’s a 105-acre garden famous for its historic and modern water features, sculptures, a surprisingly challenging maze, and a 1,000-acre park, designed by ‘Capability’ Brown in the 1760s. There are also a surprising number of quirks and curiosities, but we won’t spoil the surprise here! However, we’re not giving anything away by saying that Mary, Queen of Scots was imprisoned at Chatsworth on the orders of Elizabeth I in 1569.

There’s a farmyard adventure playground and a plethora of locally produced food and crafts to buy.

Just three miles down the road is the charming market town of Bakewell. The stone buildings and riverside location make this a delightful place to visit, but it’s probably best known for its famous Bakewell Pudding, invented here in 1820, and its equally famous Bakewell Tart.
