Background information:

Peover Hall is an Elizabethan house and a rare gem that boasts a fascinating history while remaining a family home to this day. The hall’s story begins in 1585 when it was built by Sir Randle Mainwaring. In the 1760s, a new wing was added by the fourth baronet, Sir Henry, before the estate was purchased by the Peels in 1919 and later acquired by the Brooks family, who have lived at the hall ever since.

A House Steeped in History

During World War II, Peover Hall was requisitioned as the headquarters for General George Patton of the United States 3rd Army in preparation for the D-Day landings, and it also housed a prisoner-of-war camp. Following a period of deterioration, including a fire caused by a US soldier, the Brooks family undertook a major restoration, preserving the hall’s historic character. Visitors can admire splendid oak panelling, the long gallery, and furnishings with historic connections to the Mainwarings and the hall itself, all of which reflect centuries of English heritage.

Gardens and Grounds

The gardens at Peover Hall are classical in design, featuring a magnificent 500-year-old oak tree, an avenue of pleached lime trees, and carefully maintained lawns and flowerbeds. Visitors can enjoy tranquil walks, scenic views, and the peaceful ambience of an estate that has been shaped by over four centuries of family stewardship.

Historic Stables and Local Heritage

The Grade I listed Carolean stables, built in 1654, are among the finest of their kind. Gifted by Ellen Mainwaring to her son Thomas, who became baronet in 1660, the stables feature Tuscan columns, arches, and an elegant strapwork plaster ceiling. Nearby St Lawrence’s Church contains monuments to Ellen and her husband Philip Mainwaring, linking the hall to the local heritage and community.
