Nestled in open countryside just a mile from the village of Ingatestone, Ingatestone Hall is a magnificent 16th-century manor house with an extraordinary history. Built by Sir William Petre, Secretary of State to four Tudor monarchs, the house has been continuously occupied by his descendants for over 450 years, making it a rare and authentic link to England’s Tudor past.
The hall substantially retains its original Tudor form and appearance, complete with mullioned windows, soaring chimneys, crow-step gables, and oak-panelled rooms. Inside, visitors can explore eight principal rooms filled with furniture, portraits, and fascinating family memorabilia accumulated over centuries. Among the most intriguing features are two priest’s hiding places, offering a poignant glimpse into England’s turbulent religious history.
Set within ten acres of enclosed gardens, Ingatestone Hall is surrounded by sweeping lawns, a walled garden, herbaceous borders, and a tranquil stew pond. The peaceful grounds provide a charming backdrop to the hall, inviting visitors to wander and enjoy the beauty of the Essex countryside.
On normal opening days, guests are welcome to enjoy an afternoon exploring both the historic interiors and the extensive gardens. Private guided tours for groups can also be pre-booked, offering a more in-depth exploration of the hall’s history, architecture, and collections.
Beyond its role as a family home and heritage site, Ingatestone Hall is also a versatile venue. The house and gardens provide a spectacular setting for weddings, receptions, concerts, dinners, and theatre performances, while its authentic Tudor architecture has made it a sought-after filming location. Productions filmed here include Lovejoy, the BBC’s Bleak House, Horrible Histories, The Windsors, and The Crown.
From its red-brick façade and richly panelled interiors to its peaceful gardens and royal connections, Ingatestone Hall offers a truly immersive Tudor experience. Whether you’re drawn by its history, its tranquil grounds, or its role in popular culture, this much-loved family home captures the very spirit of England’s past.
