Copped Hall

A historic house in Epping

Copped Hall is a historic country house and estate near Epping in Essex, surrounded by the landscape of Epping Forest. The site has more than 900 years of history and has links to Henry VIII, Mary I and Elizabeth I.

The present Georgian house was built between 1752 and 1758 for John Conyers, replacing an earlier Elizabethan mansion. The house was later altered and extended, with work by architect James Wyatt and designer Charles Eamer Kempe.

Copped Hall gardens and estate

The estate includes historic gardens, a large walled kitchen garden and a range of historic buildings and outbuildings. The gardens have developed over several centuries and contain features from different periods of the estate’s history.

The site also has important archaeological remains, offering an insight into the earlier buildings and development of Copped Hall.

Restoration of Copped Hall

Copped Hall was badly damaged by fire in 1917 and subsequently fell into serious decline. By the late 20th century, the house and gardens were in a neglected condition.

The Copped Hall Trust acquired the property in 1995 and began an extensive programme of conservation and restoration. Much of this work continues today, supported by volunteers and the Friends of Copped Hall Trust.

Visiting Copped Hall

Copped Hall is a private historic estate and is not open to the public every day. Visitors can explore the house, gardens and estate through advertised open days, guided tours and special events.
